5 things to do in Paphos

Paphos, sometimes referred to as Pafos, is a coastal city in the southwest of Cyprus and capital of the district. It is an extremely popular tourist destination and with good reason.

It offers a wealth of cultural and leisure activities and the city itself is rich in heritage and blessed with many hundreds of stunning views.

If you are ever lucky enough to get the chance to visit Paphos then without a doubt these are some of the things you need to do…

  1. Visit the mosque of Paphos - even if you aren’t religious, the mosque is well worth taking a trip to see. Even if you decide not to enter the mosque (remember that it is a sacred place of worship) then the architecture of the building is still superb and is an activity that any culture vulture will relish.
  2. Stroll along the promenade - this is one of the spectacular sites of Paphos; its completely free to do and offers you breathtaking views across the Mediterranean Sea. At night, the promenade is illuminated and you can enjoy the sea of twinkling lights as ships arrive and leave the harbour. Perfect for a romantic stroll after a sumptuous dinner at one of the many restaurants to line the promenade.
  3. Marvel at the Tomb of the Kings - despite its name there is no evidence that royalty have ever been buried here but it is dubbed the Tomb of the Kings due to the impressive nature of the catacombs. The tombs themselves are carved out of solid rock and are a truly impressive example of Ancient Greek civilisation. This is a must-see for anyone with an interest in historic attractions.
  4. Bask in the sunshine at Coral Bay - a long sandy beach with cool sea breezes, magnificent views and glorious sunshine. It is a sun-worshippers paradise and offers plenty for the more adventurous including scuba diving and jet skiing. Located around Coral Bay are a number of fine restaurants offering superb local cuisine.
  5. Shop til you drop at Funcouture mall (Gladstonos Avenue, 26220985) - the discerning shopper will feel right at home at Funcouture with world-class luxury brands mingled amongst Cypriot crafts and local products. It offers the perfect escape if you’re looking to escape the sun.
